The first official look at The Paperboy is a noirish, retro poster.

The unusually stylish promo one sheet (by recent Hollywood standards) shows Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman front and centre, with co-stars Matthew McConaughey and John Cusack.

Oscar-nominated Precious director Lee Daniels is tackling Pete Dexter's 1995 novel, which the Deadwood author has adapted. McConaughey plays a reporter investigating the possible wrongful conviction of a man (Cusack) on death row. The journalist recruits his troublesome little brother (Efron) to help, but the younger sibling ends up falling for a woman (Kidman) who writes passionate letters to Cusack's prisoner.

She wowed when she was spotted on the set of her brand new movie with beach blonde locks, now Nicole Kidman is set to stir up more of a fuss as the poster for The Paperboy is released.
The 44-year-old actress can be seen shooting co-star Zac Efron, 24, a suggestive glance in the retro-style image in which the actor shows emphasises his muscular frame by resting his arm out of a car window.
Despite Kidman being 20 years his senior, it is clear the pair have great chemistry in the movie which hits screens in 2012.

Yesterday, The Frozen Ground, starring John Cusack, began filming in Anchorage, Alaska.
The movie tells the real-life story of serial killer Robert Hansen, aka the “Butcher Baker”, who, between 1980-1983, kidnapped and raped at least 21 women before flying them out to a remote Alaskan location, where he would release them to hunt and kill them.
On Monday, they started filming outside Paris Bakery on Muldoon Rd in Anchorage, which is playing the role of “Hansen’s Bakery,” the shop owned by Robert Hansen. From what we’ve heard, it sounds like the will be filming outside the bakery for a few days.

According to The News Tribune, yesterday’s scenes included a vintage brown Oldsmobile arriving and parking outside the bakery just before Cusack, who plays Hansen, greets a man carrying a loaf of bread out of the shop.
The movie also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Nicolas Cage, and 50 Cent.

Three actors playing Alaska State Troopers waited Wednesday in an East Anchorage backyard as a tall man sifted through several cases of handguns.

"I'm a Realtor, actually," said a trooper in a vintage trench coat as Jason Hammond, the film's property master, prepared to hand the men their Smith & Wesson revolvers.

The weapons are fakes, the props supervisor said. All except one. "Nicolas Cage will carry a real gun, as per his request," Hammond said.

Welcome to day three of filming on "The Frozen Ground," a thriller based on the arrest of Alaska serial killer Robert Hansen. The movie spans three weeks in the investigation leading to Hansen's capture as icy fall turns to early winter in 1980s Anchorage.

With no snow yet in the city, the frozen ground in "The Frozen Ground" was played Wednesday by drifts of salt on top of white fabric surrounding a Muldoon home, not far from where the real Hansen lived.

Hansen himself is played by John Cusack, while Cage portrays a state trooper on his tail. Both actors appeared in scenes filmed Wednesday: Cage's character on stakeout in a Cadillac Brougham across the street from the Hansen house. Cusack peeking through the curtains at the suspicious car.

"Basically, any scene that shoots in or around this house, no matter where it is in the script, is being shot today because we're not going to come back here twice," said producer Mark Ordesky.

Just out of frame, trucks full of film equipment lined the street in what is becoming a common sight in Anchorage following the 2010 production of the Drew Barrymore film "Big Miracle." The family-friendly whale rescue tale, also inspired by true events, was the first modern, major movie filmed entirely in Alaska.

"Frozen Ground" is shaping up to be a smaller-scale, faster-paced production.

A producer told the Daily News earlier this year that "Whales," opening in February, would cost in the mid-$30 million range. "Frozen Ground" producer Randall Emmett said his film will cost in the mid-$20 million range.

Emmett, like every film producer to consider making movies in the state, is an evangelist for the 3-year-old Alaska tax credit program that allow filmmakers to recoup up to 44 percent of their spending. The public subsidy is among the most generous in the country.

"When a state gets an incentive at this level, like Alaska has, people now are going to really look to come here," said Emmett, who has served as a producer on more than 60 movies -- released or now in production -- since 2000.

Some of those films feature Emmett's business partner, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, who will soon begin filming the part of a pimp in "Frozen Ground."

Emmett said he was the most prolific producer in Michigan before that state gutted its tax incentives, and said he'd be interested in investing in movie-making infrastructure, such as a studio, in Alaska if the state commits long-term to incentives.

While the "Big Miracle" shoot spanned about 60 days and more 20 locations, according to permits the filmmakers filed with the city, "Frozen Ground" will be filmed in 26 days, said unit production manager Tracey Landon.

About 40 Alaskans are working on the movie crew, Landon said. That's about half the total. The cast of 50 includes another 30 Alaskans, while roughly 725 more will appear as extras, she said.

In the backyard of the house, the three movie state troopers were issued their weapons.

"So which one of us gets to tackle Cusack?" the real estate man asked. None of you, the props supervisor replied.

"Obviously, guys, there's no reason to pull these out of their holsters, so please don't," Hammond said.

The men were shown how to attach holsters to their belts. One, Ryan Rockom, ought to know. An Anchorage police officer, his 7-year-old boy plays Hansen's son in the movie and filmmakers offered him a small part of his own.

Rockom worked the night shift the evening before filming and was scheduled to be back on duty Wednesday night.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - John Cusack and Malin Akerman will star in "The Numbers Station," which starts shooting in November, Content Film announced Monday night.

Ethan Hawke originally was to star in and produce the thriller.

According to Content, "Cusack plays a disgraced black ops agent tasked with a dead-end job of protecting a code operator for an isolated covert CIA broadcast station played by Akerman. His mission is simple: protect the code operator. Keep her safe and secure, whilst knowing that she must never be taken alive..."

F. Scott Frazier wrote the script. Frazier is an increasingly hot commodity in Hollywood. In February, he sold a spec script, "Line of Sight," to Warner Bros. for Joel Silver to produce.

"The Numbers Station" will be directed by Kasper Barfoed, the Danish director of "Kandidaten" ("The Candidate"), "Listetyven" ("The Performance") and the award-winning children's feature "Tempelriddernes skat" ("The Lost Treasure of the Knights Templar").

Cusack starred in "2012," "Con Air" and "Grosse Pointe Blank," among others. Akerman starred in "The Proposal," "Watchmen" and "Couples Retreat." She stars in New Line's upcoming musical "Rock of Ages."

Content Film International acquired "The Numbers Station" for worldwide distribution at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Back in April of 2010, it looked as though Ethan Hawke was going to be reteaming with Sean and Bryan Furst - the producers of the vampire flick Daybreakers - for the action thriller The Numbers Station. Since then news about the project has been slim, with the exception of news that broke in September of last year, announcing that Malin Akerman had joined the cast as well. Fast forward a year and while Akerman is attached, it looks like Hawke has been replaced.

Variety is reporting that John Cusack has been cast to star in The Numbers Station. Directed by Danish filmmaker Kasper Barfoed (The Candidate) and written by F. Scott Frazier, the movie is about a "disgraced black-ops agent" who is reduced to playing bodyguard to a code operator for a secret CIA broadcast station. While the article doesn't say it, one can assume that the drama begins when the outpost falls under attack. The film is scheduled to go into production next month.

Cusack has a fairly heavy upcoming schedule, with The Factory bowing in December and The Raven, Limbo, The Paperboy, and The Frozen Ground all coming out in 2012. The actor's last film was the Steve Pink comedy Hot Tub Time Machine.

This project sounds like pretty standard action fare, but I will say that I do like John Cusack in the role better than Ethan Hawke. Nothing against Hawke - he's a fine actor - but any time I get to be reminded of Cusack movies like Grosse Pointe Blank I see it as a win.

The veteran TV actress will play Ferrell's wife in Warner Bros.' comedy "Dog Fight" and Cusack's wife in the thriller "The Frozen Ground."
Katherine LaNasa, who has spent the better part of the past decade making various television appearances, has booked roles opposite major stars in a couple of high-profile movies.

LaNasa has nabbed the role of Will Ferrell’s wife in Dog Fight, the Warner Bros. political comedy that also stars Zack Galifianakis. She also will play John Cusack’s wife in The Frozen Ground, a serial killer thriller that also stars Nicolas Cage.

Jay Roach is directing Dog Fight, once known as Southern Rivals, with Gary Sanchez Prods. and Everyman Pictures producing. The comedy tells the tale of two rival politicians in a small congressional district in South Carolina. Sarah Baker, another actress who has long worked in television, was cast as Galifianakis’ wife earlier this week.

Frozen Ground details the true story of the capture of serial killer Robert Hansen in Alaska. Cage is an Alaska state trooper tracking Hansen, played by Cusack. Randall Emmett and Mark Ordesky are producing the indie, which starts shooting this week in Alaska.

LaNasa, repped by IFA Talent, has appeared on shows such as Two and a Half Men, Big Love and Judging Amy, but her newfound heat could be due to work in Jayne Mansfield’s Car for writer-director Billy Bob Thornton; LaNasa snagged that role when it was initially earmarked for Robin Wright.

John Cusack and Johnny Knoxville are set to star in Carnaval, a comedy directed by Josh Stern. Cusack will play a sports scout who tavels to Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval in order to sign a soccer star, while Knoxville has been cast as Cusack’s musician best friend who tags along. Cusack’s character needs to bring the player on board so that he can take over his agency, but his plans go awry when Knoxville’s character sleeps with the player’s girlfriend. Carnaval will begin shooting in Rio this January.

Knoxville’s been on a roll lately in terms of landing roles. Over the past few months, he’s signed on for the teen comedy Fun Size, an untitled camping comedy with Patton Oswalt, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick The Last Stand. Cusack also has a handful of movies lined up for next year, including Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy, the Edgar Allan Poe thriller The Raven, and the serial killer drama The Frozen Ground. Speaking of Cusack, the actor has just gained an onscreen wife in the form of TV vet Katherine LaNasa, who’s just been cast in The Frozen Ground. Written and directed by Scott Walker, the thriller is based on the real-life tale of Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen, who’ll be played in the movie by Cusack. The eclectic cast also includes Nicolas Cage as a state trooper, 50 Cent as a pimp, and Vanessa Hudgens as an escaped victim.
The Frozen Ground is one of two gigs that LaNasa has recently picked up. The other, Jay Roach‘s Dog Fight (formerly titled Southern Rivals, and then just Rivals) should be much lighter. The comedy follows two politicians (Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis) running against each other in a congressional district race in South Carolina. LaNasa will play Ferrell’s wife, while Sarah Baker will co-star as Galifianakis’.

LaNasa’s extensive small-screen work includes parts in Two and a Half Men and Big Love, but she’s been gravitating toward film roles as of late. We haven’t heard much about Bille August‘s Night Train to Lisbon since Jeremy Irons joined back in June, but a slew of intriguing names have just become attached to the project. Vanessa Redgrave, Melanie Laurent, Bruno Ganz, Christopher Lee, Lena Olin, Martina Gedeck, and Jack Huston will also star in the thriller, an adaptation of Pascal Mercier‘s bestselling novel. They’ll be joined by August Diehl, Nicolau Breyner, Adriano Luz, Jose Wallenstein, and Beatriz Batarda, all of whom were also recently announced for the picture.

The plot centers around a Swiss classics professor who saves a mysterious Portuguese woman from jumping to her death. Soon afterward, he falls in love with a Portuguese novel that inspires him to quit his job and travel to Lisbon in order to learn more about its writer. It is not clear at this point which actors will be playing which characters. The existential thriller is scheduled to begin shooting in March. [Variety]

Katherine LaNasa landed the role of wife in a pair of high-profile projects today. First up is Dog Fight (formerly known as Southern Rivals), the political comedy that pits Will Ferrell against Zach Galifianakis. The comic actors play two rival politicians in a small congressional district in South Carolina. LaNasa is set to play Ferrell’s wife; Sarah Baker was cast as Galifianakis’ wife earlier in the week. Jay Roach (Dinner for Schmucks) will direct Dog Night for an August 10, 2012 release.

THR reports that LaNasa will play the wife of John Cusack’s character in The Frozen Ground. The film is based on the true story of an Alaskan family man (Cusack) who, for 12 years, abducted over 24 women and flew them to the wilderness where he hunted them for sport. Nicolas Cage is set to play Detective Glenn Flothe, who teamed up with the serial killer’s only escaped victim (Vanessa Hudgens) to eventually bring him to justice. Scott Walker wrote the script, and will make his directorial debut. Randall Emmett and Mark Ordeky are producing. The Frozen Ground starts shooting this week in Alaska.

LaNasa has spent the last decade or so paying her dues in television guest spots on Judging Amy, House, and Two and a Half Men among others. Recently, she was one of the few stars of Valentine’s Day who wasn’t a household name. THR speculates that this newfound attention could be due to her upcoming role in Billy Bob Thorton’s Jayne Mansfield’s Car.

John Cusack And Johnny Knoxville Teaming Up For Carnaval Comedy

John Cusack and Johnny Knoxville are two people I would never expect to see listed together, unless it was on a list of People I Would Never Expect to See Listed Together. Nevertheless, the unlikely has become reality, because THR says the pair have both signed on for Carnaval, a new comedy to be directed by Josh Stern.

As the title suggests, Carnaval will be set amidst Rio de Janeiro's annual epic festival. Cusack will play a sports agent who is sent to Rio to try and sign an incredibly talented local soccer player. He's got a lot on the line: if he makes the deal, he will inherit the entire agency for which he works. Knoxville will play a friend of Cusack's character who tags along for the ride, then winds up unwittingly boning the soccer star's girlfriend. Shouldn't be a problem, right? What happens in Carnaval, stays in Carnaval.

The script was originally written by a dude named David Styne, himself a former agent. Clearly Styne subscribes to the "write what you know" philosophy. Director Stern then came along and did a rewrite pass on the script. Those guys should totally form a law firm. "Styne and Stern: A Name You Can Trust."

The core concept is pretty basic, but the dynamic between Cusack and Knoxville could be fun. Also, Carnaval will be shooting this January in Rio de Janeiro, so it should have some great scenery if nothing else. Of course, if The Hangover Part II proved anything, it's that exotic locales won't make up for an underwhelming script. We'll just have to wait and see.

Önce Galata Kulesi'nde arkadaşları ile yemek yiyen Cusack daha sonra eğlenmek için Reina'ya geçti. Cusack Boğaz manzarası eşliğinde nargile keyfi yaptı. Boğaz'a büyük hayranlık duyduğunu belirten Cusack daha önce de geldiği İstanbul'un en beğendiği şehirlerden biri olduğunu söyledi. ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Rap star 50 Cent has signed on to play a pimp in a movie detailing Alaska's infamous serial killer, Robert Hansen.
The Anchorage Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/pLfb7T) Curtis Jackson, the performer's real name, has been cast for "Frozen Ground."
Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage will star in the movie detailing the police investigation of Hansen, who preyed on prostitutes and strippers in the 1970s and early '80s in Anchorage. Hansen confessed to killing 17 women; some he let loose in the Alaska wilderness and hunted.

Cage will play an Alaska State Trooper who investigated the murders. John Cusack will play Hansen, and Vanessa Hudgens, of "High School Musical" fame, will play a victim who escaped.
Filming is scheduled to start in Anchorage in October.

50 Cent Lands Role As A Pimp In Serial Killer Movie That Also Stars Nicolas Cage & John Cusack

50 Cent has landed a significant role in the upcoming movie Frozen Ground.

The movie is based on real life serial killer Robert Hansen aka the "Butcher Baker." Between 1980-1983 Hansen kidnapped and raped at least 21 women before flying them out to a remote Alaskan location, where he would release, then hunt and kill them.

Initially it was announced that 50 would serve as one of the executive producers of the film, which is being produced by Emmett/Furla Films. Fif has also now landed a "substantial" role in the film as a pimp according to Emmett.

“The director thought that there was a great role for him and I gave him the script,” Emmett told the Anchorage Daily News.

“He’s basically moved a lot of tour dates and a bunch of stuff that he has on his calendar to be committed and up in Alaska."

Frozen Ground will also star John Cusack as Hansen. Vanessa Hudgens will play 17-year old would-be victim Cindy Paulson, who escaped from the killer. And Nicolas Cage is set to play the role of an Alaska State Trooper who tracks Hansen down with Paulson's help.

Comic-Con ‘11: John Cusack Says ‘The Raven’ “An Art Movie And A Popcorn Movie” Rolled Into One

As you already know by now, we’ve been kind of cautiously optimistic about “The Raven.” Directed by “V For Vendetta” and “Ninja Assassin” helmer James McTeigue and starring John Cusack, Luke Evans, Brendan Gleeson and Alice Eve, the film takes a interesting twist on the life of poet Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack), pitching the famed writer into a serial killer thriller which features Poe teaming up with a detective (Evans) to track down a murderer who mimics his work, in the last week of the writer’s life. In addition to ripping his books for ideas on how to kill people, the murderer will also kidnap Cusack’s fiancee played by Eve.
This afternoon at Comic-Con Cusack, Eve and McTeigue met with the throng to talk about the film and the lead actor confirmed that it will be a mix of sensibilities. “It’s an art movie and a popcorn movie all at once, so it gives you everything you want out of making a movie,” he said, adding, “Up until this point there had never been a Poe movie because of how miserable his life was. There was never an opportunity without sort of having this dour film….To do justice to Poe, you have to honor what his is life was.”
Cusack and McTeigue researched Poe in depth, reading his letters and finding inspiration in Peter Ackroyd‘s book “Poe: A Life Cut Short.” The film obviously takes liberties with his life, but the movie promises to be somewhat impressionistic with Cusack describing the picture as “a dream I had about Poe, a dream James McTeigue had about Poe, a dream Alice Eve had about Poe.”
The real life Poe lived almost as strangely as he died—found wearing someone else’s clothes, wandering the streets of Baltimore pleading for help before dying—and his uneasy relationship with women was likely due to the tragic loss of his mother when he was 3 years old, followed by the death of his wife when he was 25. “It’s obviously all conjecture because I wasn’t there, it seemed to me that he held females up to an almost—he didn’t really like the company of men…he saw any man, he wanted to get into a fight with them, he either want to get into a duel with them or insult them,” Cusack elaborated about Poe’s relationships. “He held [women] up to a muse-like—his version of heaven was the perfect, untouched woman…he had this sense of yearning for women, but women abandoning him.”
“He was a bit of rock star. He’d go to a salon, these high society functions, and women would fawn all over him,” he adds. But whether or not he cared for their company is another story.

And for film nerds, having Steven Sodebergh on hand certainly doesn’t hurt. Any day that involves a Con Air reunion is a good day. Nicolas Cage and John Cusack, who were the stars of the 1997 action film centering on a prison-hijacked plane (genius!), are in negotiations to reteam on The Frozen Ground. The film is based on the true story of an Alaskan family man who, for 12 years, abducted over 24 women and flew them to the wilderness where he hunted them for sport. Detective Glenn Flothe teamed up with the serial killer’s only escaped victim to eventually bring him to justice.

If you thought you knew who would play what role, you’re probably wrong. Deadline reports that Cage is eyeing the part of Detective Flothe while Cusack would play Robert Hansen, the serial killer. Scott Walker wrote and will make his directorial debut on the project. If both actors sign on, this’ll make for one hell of a creepy project.

Cusack is in talks to play a respected family man who for over 12 years abducted more than 24 women and flew them into the Alaskan wilderness to be hunted. Cage is in talks to play a principled and dedicated Alaskan State Trooper who finds Hansen's only surviving teen victim alive on the street. John Cusack is playing Edgar Allan Poe and, much as I loved Hot Tub Time Machine, at this point in his career it’s probably a good idea. The movie he’s doing it in is called The Raven and it’s a mystery-thriller in which the famously bummed out poet is enlisted by the police to hunt down a serial killer.

The movie’s first poster has arrived and while it doesn’t actually feature Cusack’s famous face (plenty of images showing him in full Edgar Allan Poe costume here) it’s still incredibly cool. Lots of poster debuts today. Columbia released a simple, beautiful poster for Moneyball, which stands among my most anticipated movies of the fall. Relativity followed up on the new images from their movies that will appear at Comic-Con — Haywire, The Raven, Shark Night 3D, and Immortals — with the first posters for Haywire and The Raven. (Immortals and Shark Night were posterized in previous months.) Lastly, Marvel uploaded two pieces of concept art tied to The Avengers; the Iron Man poster lists the May 2012 release, the Captain America poster gives their state: “Assembled.”

John Cusack has signed on to star in Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels’ (Precious) adaptation of the 1995 Pete Dexter novel, The Paperboy. Cusack replaces Tobey Maguire who was forced to drop from the pic as a result of scheduling conflicts with The Great Gatsby. Zac Efron also stars in The Paperboy with both Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey in “advanced negotiations” to join the project as well.

Dexter’s novel is set in Florida and centers on a pair of brothers who team-up to investigate the potential wrongful conviction of a death-row inmate. Per Variety, Cusack will play the prisoner in question. The thesp can next be seen in a pair of thrillers The Factory and The Raven which hit theaters on December 19th, 2011 and March 9th, 2012 respectively. The first image of John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in the thriller The Raven has landed online. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film is set in 1849 and stars Cusack as the iconic author/poet who joins forces with a detective in hopes of stopping a murderer who is inspired by Poe’s work. Luke Evans, Alice Eve, and Brendan Gleeson also star in the pic. I’m really liking the Se7en vibe the logline gives and, as a fan of both Poe and Cusack, I’m pretty excited about checking this one out when it hits theaters on March 9th, 2012.

Relativity Media has unveiled the first official photo of John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in "The Raven" thriller, directed by James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin, V for Vendetta) and set to hit theaters on March 9th, 2012. Check it out below.

The new movie is a fictional story about what would happen if a serial killer challenged poet Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack) to solve a series of killings inspired by his own stories.

"It's sort of 'Se7en' meets a series of Poe stories. It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it," McTeigue previously stated, adding that Poe's real life will be used in the film as well

First Official Look At John Cusack In The Raven

Though I'm not entirely sure why, I'm actually looking forward to James McTeigue's The Raven. Admittedly it's kind of strange to take one of history's greatest writers, Edgar Allan Poe, and turn him into a detective, but it could be fun and has a solid cast lined up in John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson. Back in November, some on-set photographers managed to get a shot of Cusack in costume, but today the first official photo has been released.

Though the new still cuts off at the actor's thighs so you can't see if he's still wearing those sweet black sneakers, you can't say that Cusack doesn't look pretty damn cool in the get up. Based on a script by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare, the plot is about a serial killer who is basing his crimes on those in Poe's stories. The movie isn't set to be released until March 9, 2012, but it will be featured in a Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con, so don't be too surprised if footage finds its way online sooner than later.

John Cusack has signed on to star in the screwball comedy Dictablanda (translated “Soft Dictator”). Cusack co-wrote the script with Kevin Morris and co-star Paul Hipp (Terriers); Cusack and Morris will produce along with Pablo Bossi of Pampa Films. Plot details are vague other than the promise of “international mayhem,” yet the film already has a baffling tagline: “People don’t die, they get killed.” Variety reports that Dictablanda is filming on location in Argentina over the next two months under the direction of Alejandro Agresti (The Lake House).

Cusack recently finished shooting his portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe in the thriller The Raven. The actor has two other films in the can with no set release date in sight: the period piece Shanghai and the crime drama The Factory.

John Cusack To Star In Screwball Comedy Dictablanda

John Cusack doesn't always make the greatest movies in the world, but the guy is so incredibly likable that it's even easy to sit through some of the worse ones (*cough*2012*cough*) . That in mind, when Cusack gets something great to work with - like Grosse Pointe Blank or High Fidelity - it becomes something truly special. Dictablanda sounds like it could fall into the latter category.

Variety has learned that Cusack has signed on to star in the aforementioned film (which translates from Spanish into "Soft Dictator") that is described as "a screwball comedy of errors." Directed by Alejandro Agresti and based on a script by Agresti, Cusack, Kevin Morris and Paul Hipp, the actor plays a man caught up in an international situation. Hipp, who previously starred with Cusack in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil will co-star. Sold with the tagline "People don't die, they get killed" the film is set to go into production later this month in Argentina.

I truly love a well-made screwball comedy, and I must say that Cusack getting a co-writing credit instills great hope (he co-wrote both classic Cusack films that I mentioned above). Let's hope this is one to look out for come next year.

John Cusack has signed on to star in Dictablanda ("Soft Dictator"), a screwball comedy that the actor also co-wrote.

According to Variety, Pablo Bossi's Pampa Films is producing the film, directed by Alejandro Agresti from a script co-written with John Cusack, Kevin Morris and Paul Hipp, who also co-stars.

The film, which has the tagline "People don't die, they get killed," is currently filming on location in Buenos Aires and Mar de Ajo, Argentina throughout March and April.

John Cusack has been announced as the lead of Dictablanda, a comedy from The Lake House director Alejandro Agresti, Variety reports.

Cusack was involved with co-writing the script, alongside Agresti, Kevin Morris and Paul Hipp (who will also appear).

The title is a political term used to describe dictatorships with a high regard for civil liberties and is described as being a "screwball comedy of manners."

John Cusack is to take on the role of a "soft" dictator for a new screwball comedy titled Dictablanda.

The actor will also be producing and co-writing the venture himself, says Variety.

According to the report, the film's tagline will be: "People don't die, they get killed."

It is to be helmed by the director of The Lake House and will be shot in Brazil and Argentina.

Cusack's previous comedies have included Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, both of which were co-written by him.

Amanda Seyfried's schedule is plenty packed these days, filming the futuristic thriller Now opposite Justin Timberlake, signing on recently for the kidnapping revenge film Gone, and getting ready to open her revisionist take on Red Riding Hood with director Catherine Hardwicke. But has she made room for one more movie in her lineup, to shoot in Boston this April?

According to Boston film production sources (via Bleeding Cool) she has. They're hearing that director Patrick Alessandrin will be in the area come April to shoot The Bullet, which has Amanda Seyfriend and John Cusack on board to star. Here's the only information available about the plot:
"The dark thriller about a man only known as “The Clockmaker” who devises the ultimate plot of revenge against a seemingly random group of people by manipulating them to kill one another.

No word on whether Cusack will play the killer-- an interesting change of pace I'd actually be interested to see-- or just another one of the victims. Also no confirmation of whether or not the movie is as much of a Saw knockoff as it sounds right now. Both Seyfriend and Cusack have been known to make their share of garbage among actually good movies-- Cusack more than ever these days-- and Alessandrin's one major credit is B-13: Ultimatum, the sequel to the French action film that garnered relatively good reviews.

If the news is even true-- it's hard to confirm information on sites like this, and Bleeding Cool doesn't know anything more than we do-- we might have a bizarre Seyfried/Cusack pairing to look forward to, and also some questions about what was supposed to be Alessandrin's next project, Ten with Bruce Willis. According to Wicked Leaked, a new movie called The Bullet will be shot in Boston this spring.
Though we have found little additional information about the movie, it is apparently “a dark thriller about a man only known as ‘The Clockmaker’ who devises the ultimate plot of revenge against a seemingly random group of people by manipulating them to kill one another.” Amanda Seyfried and John Cusack are set to star.
Michigan is also mentioned as a potential filming location but given the current state of their tax incentives, producers may be looking for a replacement location.

As I understood it, Patrick Alessandrin is currently working on the thriller TEN with Bruce Willis. I don’t know the details of his schedule there – if he’s already shot the film, is currently mid-production, or if the film was delayed or even cancelled – but I do recall reports that filming was set to start in December.
Knowing what was going on with TEN would probably make matters clearer regarding this new report, and very possibly sift crap from gold. Let’s give the timing the benefit of the doubt for now.
Over on Beantown.Name, a site which offers updates on movie projects for actors and film crew seeking gigs around the Boston area, Alessandrin will be in the city this April to make The Bullet. Here’s how they pitch it:
Amanda Seyfried and John Cusack will star in the dark thriller about a man only known as “The Clockmaker” who devises the ultimate plot of revenge against a seemingly random group of people by manipulating them to kill one another.
Seyfried’s very hot right now, and Cusack’s a handsome devil, so this should be a popular cast. Alessandrin has also shown some capabilities with action in B-13: Ultimatum.
I’ve not been able to dig up any more info on the project so far, but stay tuned.

Yesterday, we brought you an image from the set of the Edgar Allen Poe thriller The Raven that was tweeted by star John Cusack in remembrance of the famed poet’s birthday. Today, it was announced that the film now has a US distributor. Deadline reports that Relativity Media has acquired the US distribution rights to the film. Directed by James McTiegue (V for Vendetta), the film tells the story of Poe teaming up with a detective to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiancée and gone on a murder spree that recalls Poe’s stories. The events all take place in the days before the poet’s death.

Cusack stars alongside Luke Evans (Tamara Drewe), Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) and Brendan Gleeson. Cross your fingers for more sad-face Cusack pictures from the set as filming continues.

John Cusack has tweeted a photo from the set of James McTeigue’s upcoming thriller The Raven. In the film, Cusack plays famous author Edgar Allan Poe. Poe must team with a detective (Luke Evans) after the author’s fiancée (Alice Eve) has been kidnapped by a serial killer who is using Poe’s work as inspiration for a murder spree. Today is Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday so Cusack tweeted an image of Poe’s (presumably) favorite things: chairs bearing his name and bottles of Fiji water. Had Poe not died at the relatively young age of 40 in 1849, he would still be dead as people don’t live to the age of 202.

Almost exactly a month ago we got our first look at John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in John McTeigue’s The Raven, and while an on set pic of the man looking a little bored is all fine and well we’ve now got a far better look Cusack with the titular bird.
The Huffington Post had the pic, which is complemented below by another from Cusack’s twitter account and he certainly looks the part. The film is termed a psychological thriller based around the mysterious last days of Poe and a serial killer inspired by his works.

About a month ago we were given our first look at John Cusack sporting his very best goatee in a spy image captured from the set of The Raven, the fictionalized story of Edgar Allan Poe’s final days. The image wasn’t official, but showed us that Cusack is pulling the look off. Today, The Huffington Post has gotten their hands on the first official promo image of Poe himself holding his iconic black bird.

Far from giving away anything about what we can expect from the film, the image still manages to be a decent look at Cusack doing something even more “Poe” than just standing in the street. Back in June we gave you a few photos.

If this is your first time hearing about the Morgan O'Neill-directed film, the quick re-cap is that it stars John Cusack and Jennifer Carpenter and was produced through Dark Castle.

Cusack plays Detective Mike Fletcher, a rugged and obsessive cop, and his partner Kelsey Walker, are on the trail of a serial killer who prowls the streets targeting young streetwalkers. When Fletcher's teenage daughter disappears, he discovers the killer has kidnapped her after mistaking her for a hooker. His obsession goes into overdrive when he drops all professional restraint to get to the killer and save his daughter.

The film has bounced around various release dates and was recently pushed out of a January 2011 debut. We're still awaiting word on a new date.

Wow, I had forgotten all about Dark Castle's THE FACTORY... perhaps it's because it's been shuffling around like a hobo since 2007. (Our first article about it was in November of that year.) One of those troubled flicks that has had a multitude of release dates in its past, it last found itself in a January 28, 2011 slot, only to eventually lose it... Clearly, all is not well.

But... that doesn't mean people are working on it still. IM Global, the sales company the represents the film, has whipped up a promo poster (sorry for the quality, but it's all that's available) and given the flick a new synopsis. Most likely, THE FACTORY will have a presence at the upcoming American Film Market, so expect to see some more from it in the coming weeks. (Just don't expect a release date.)

John Cusack's Tweets are infamous for being somewhat hard to decipher (or, some would say, grammatically incorrect and full of typos, but these people need to chill a little), but they're always pretty entertaining and occasionally political. Now we can turn to them for breaking news as well. Earlier yesterday he confirmed he will be joining the film The Raven: "officiali- will play edgar allen poe in fall-a-film called the raven, send any poe- gold - my way as i begin this journey into the abyss".

That would be James McTeigue's The Raven; the director began discussing his film during press for last summer's Ninja Assassin. At the time, he told Cinematical that it "is about the fictionalized last five days of Edgar Allen Poe. There's a serial killer loose in 1850s Baltimore who's killing people in the manner Poe kills people in his stories. And it's a race against time for Poe and a detective to find the killer. I'm in the middle of casting at the moment, I was scouting in Europe and just got back." Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare (Loverboy) penned the screenplay.

It was previously reported that Jeremy Renner and Ewan McGregor would star in the movie -- perhaps with McGregor as the killer? -- but for now, it's anyone's guess who will be opposite Cusack. Of course, I'm assuming that he'll be playing Poe, but perhaps he'll be the killer? In any case, it will be great to see Cusack on the big screen again. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go rewatch Hot Tub Time Machine again.

John Cusack has revealed through his Twitter account that he's set to play legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe.

"officiali- will play edgar allen poe in fall-a-film called the raven, send any poe- gold - my way as i begin this journey into the abyss" says the tweet.

At last report, James McTeigue ("V for Vendetta") would direct the project which re-imagines the author as something of a mid-19th century profiler who joins the hunt for a serial killer whose murders are inspired by his stories.

The film's setting takes place during the final week leading up to Poe's death in 1849, during which the author essentially vanished for several days with no account of his whereabouts. He was found wandering the streets of Baltimore in great distress and repeating the name Reynolds before dying several days later in hospital.

Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston penned the screenplay.

John Cusack, last seen in the mock eighties movie Hot Tub Time Machine, is set to play Edgar Allan Poe in a fictional thriller.

Cusack will portray he American literary icon in The Raven, directed by James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin, V For Vendetta ), according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Send any poe-gold my way as i begin this journey into the abyss," the 44-year-old performer said on his Twitter account late Friday.

He also revealed in the tweet that the role had originated with British actor Michael Sheen, known for his portrayal of ex-British Prime Minister Tony Blair in The Queen.

"Just a few weeks ago I spoke at Comic-Con with actor Michael Sheen, who said he planned to portray Poe during his last days in a film called The Raven." Comic-Con is the annual pop culture convention in San Diego.

The story will be set in the last five days of Poe's life. The plot circles on the kidnapping of Poe's fiancée by a serial killer, causing the writer to partner with a detective in search of her.

In the movie, the killer goes on a murder rampage that parallels the author's work.

Shooting in Serbia and Hungary is set to begin in October. The European locations will stand in for the city of Baltimore, circa 1849.

Oh, Twitter… How useful you are for letting actors (and other filmmaking folk) announce details of future projects through unofficial channels. The latest celebrity Twitterator to give his career the 140-character press treatment is John Cusack, who has announced that he’s playing Edgar Allen Poe in The Raven.

V for Vendetta/Ninja Assassin’s James McTeigue is busy gearing up the film, which is set during the last five days of the writer’s life. But this isn’t some stuffy biopic with him gracefully dying and experiencing characters from his stories coming to life… Nope, the tale will see him teaming up with a detective to hunt down a serial killer with a serious Poe obsession who has kidnapped the scribbler’s fiancée and is out on a murder spree inspired by his work. Well, it’s only a slightly worse idea than some fan fiction we’ve read in our time…

McTeigue has been through a few Poes as the film has developed, with Joaquin Phoenix and Ewan McGregor both attached at different times. And he’ll need to find a new detective, since his most recent choice, Jeremy Renner, is headed off to join the new Mission: Impossible film (which is apparently no longer using the “4” in its title).

The film will start shooting at the end of October in Budapest and Serbia. Cusack, meanwhile, should really look into a sub-editor for his tweets…

This is one of the cooler projects I've heard of in a while. John Cusack announced on Friday via Twitter that he would be playing legendary 19th century author Edgar Allan Poe in a film titled The Raven. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin), the movie won't be an adaptation of the Poe poem of the same name, but rather a thriller in which Edgar Allan Poe attempts to stop a serial killer whose murders are based on Poe's stories. Sounds a bit like Sleepy Hollow without the supernatural element (presumably). Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Ewan McGregor had previously been attached; it's unsure if either is still in the picture.

The project has been in the works for a while and has had to contend with several acting reversals. Jeremy Renner had been attached since last year as the detective but just this week bolted to “Mission: Impossible 4.”

Here's a bit of interesting casting boys and girls.

John Cusack took to his twitter account to give everyone some news: "officiali- will play edgar allen poe in fall-a-film called the raven, send any poe- gold - my way as i begin this journey into the abyss."

Lloyd Dobler has a major challenge facing him. Can Cusack nail, or at least closely nail the quiet, drunken charm of Poe? Well sure the women find the actor dreamy, but it's a lot more than that. Cusack is great but is essentially always very Cusack. I'll definitely been pulling for him.

John McTeigue's THE RAVEN has been on the radar for quite some time now. The film is more fiction than biographical and was described as a little like SE7EN by McTeigue, "Here's basically a serial killer loose in 1850's Baltimore and he's using Poe's stories as his methodology, so then he leaves clues at each murder and says it's up to Poe to find him before he kills (again)." Poe assists in finding the killer in a 5-day span. It sounds pretty awesome. Interweaving Poe's short stories into the movie will be a fun and interesting thing to do, especially to see what shape they end up taking.

At one time, Jeremy Renner and Ewan McGregor were up for the role of Poe.

It’s always strange when an actor decides to make an announcement about a role they’ll be playing instead of seeing it in a press release or through trade report.

Nevertheless, sometimes this does happen, and today John Cusack decided to share a sizable announcement via his Twitter account. The actor shared that he would be playing none other than Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue’s new movie, The Raven. Cusack tweeted “officiali- will play edgar allen poe in fall-a-film called the raven, send any poe- gold – my way as i begin this journey into the abyss.”

What we know about the movie is that it will tell the story of Poe’s mysterious final days in the 19th century as he tries to solve a string of murders committed using the stories of Poe as inspiration. Along with The Raven, other classic tales being integrated into the film include Tell-Tale Heart, Premature Burial, Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Cask of Amontillado, all with a tone comparable to that of David Fincher’s Se7en.

We had previously heard that The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner was also cast in the movie and that Ewan McGregor was in talks for a role, but with no confirmation on McGregor and Renner joining The Avengers and Mission: Impossible 4, it’s unclear where those two stand.

The Raven is written by Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston.

John Cusack announced last night that he'll star in James McTeigue's The Raven, a film not actually based on the famous Poe poem of the same name. Instead, the fictional thriller takes place over the last five days in Poe's life, with a serial killer running around 1849 Baltimore using Poe's stories as inspiration for his murders. Cusack tweeted, "send any poe — gold — my way as i begin this journey into the abyss."

In related news, Cusack, who previously bragged about his Super Bowl–related mushroom trip (pictured), also tweeted, "i ave been nomintated as stoner of the year at the stony awards — for my gripping and tragic portrayal of adam in hot tub tme meachine." The typos were part of his Method acting!

John Cusack will play Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue's "The Raven," the actor announced on Twitter on Friday.

Originally written by Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston, the period serial killer thriller takes place during the last five days of Poe's life, when a serial killer haunts Baltimore by using Poe's sinister stories as the inspiration for his macabre crimes. The author teams up with a young detective to track the maniac before he strikes again.

A legendary alcoholic, Poe died under mysterious circumstances on the streets of Baltimore at the age of 40 in 1849.

McTeigue told Slash Film last year that the film is "like the poem, 'The Raven,' itself, crossed with 'Se7en.'"

Jeremy Renner and Ewan McGregor were previously attached to the project, which also had Brad Anderson developing it for a while.

Intrepid Pictures principals Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans will produce "The Raven" with FilmNation's Aaron Ryder, who brought the script to Intrepid after developing the project for years with Endgame, which is no longer involved. Production is scheduled for late fall in Serbia.
Intrepid is co-producing and co-financing Mabrouk El Mechri's thriller "The Cold Light of Day" with Summit, while FilmNation has "The House at the End of the Street" in production with Jennifer Lawrence, Max Thieriot and Elisabeth Shue starring. The latter company is selling international rights to "The Raven," while the former searches for a domestic distributor.

"Shanghai"Bottom Line: Hoary WWII romantic thriller bites off far more than it can chew and chokes on its own ambitions.
HONG KONG -- "Shanghai," a would-be World War II epic romance with a chaser of intrigue, comes with a boatload of production gossip because of China's refusal to allow shooting in the country and an editing process that lasted nearly two years.

The film, which finally made its debut at the Shanghai International Film Festival, is no game-saver for the Weinstein Co. as it lacks the stylistic and narrative punch needed to separate itself from the pack.

In Asia, pan-continental stars Gong Li, Chow Yun-fat and Ken Watanabe will generate interest. Domestically, the film will face its biggest hurdle in its undetermined release date. Boxoffice prospects look middling at best, if not outright bleak.

In an overstuffed mash-up of "Purple Butterfly," "Lust Caution," "Witness" and a touch of "Hanover Street," the story begins in late 1941 with American spy Paul Soames (John Cusack, not nearly cynical enough) being interrogated by occupied Shanghai's Japanese security chief (Watanabe). The latter wants to know where to find a missing woman, a question Soames can't answer.

Soames is in Shanghai at the behest of his boss (David Morse) to look into the murder of his colleague and best friend, Connor (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Soames gets pulled into cloak-and-dagger Resistance action when he's compelled to cozy up to local gangster and possible collaborator Anthony Lan-Ting (Chow) and his beautiful wife, Anna (Gong).

"Shanghai" does not suffer from poor production or ineptitude: Production designer Jim Clay ("Children of Men"), costume designer Julie Weiss ("Hollywoodland") and cinematographer Benoit Delhomme ("The Proposition") have each proved more than capable of elegantly and vividly rendering select times and places onscreen. Despite its Thai shooting locations, "Shanghai" has a nice hard-boiled vibe and a sense of semi-exotic danger.

However, Mikael Hafstrom (the moderate art house hit "Evil" and Cusack's "1408") and writer Hossein Amini ("Jude," "Killshot") overcook the rice. There is a simplistic nature to the narrative and archetypes that gum up the works. Some of this stems from "Shanghai's" schizophrenic personality. The film tries to be a romance, political thriller and historical drama but winds up merely muddled and scattered.

Cusack and Gong generate little in the way of sexual tension. The all-important kiss-or-fight sequence has zero erotic charge, coming off as a spat between siblings. Watanabe, one of Asia's most dignified actors, is forced to maneuver around unwieldy stereotyping.

Chow could do a duplicitous Triad in his sleep, but his sketchy character doesn't really pop until he gets a moment to channel "Hard Boiled." In a microscopic role as a key witness/love interest, Kikuchi Rinko ("Babel") does ... not much.

It has been a while since an old-fashioned wartime spy thriller graced screens, so "Shanghai" tries hard to squeeze every single element that made the greats great into its frame. In the end, "Shanghai" is a long way from "Casablanca."

EW DVD Review: "Hot Tub Time Machine"

In the 1992 movie "Unforgiven," an older and wiser Clint Eastwood returned to the genre that made him a star to make a profound statement about the films of his youth. In a way, "Hot Tub Time Machine" is John Cusack's "Unforgiven."

After all, if you grew up during that glorious teen-comedy decade known as the 1980s, there's no question that you have a huge soft spot for Cusack's screwball trilogy, "The Sure Thing," "Better Off Dead" and "One Crazy Summer."

Granted, none of those movies are what anyone would all "classics," but they are a heck of a lot of fun, thanks to the then-babyfaced Cusack's deadpan one-liners and bemused "every guy" appeal.

The 44-year-old version of the actor can try to play it straight and serious all he wants these days, but for a certain segment of his audience, Cusack will always be Walter "Gib" Gibson or Lane Myer, dodging an irate newspaper deliveryboy who really wants his two dollars.

"Hot Tub Time Machine" is literally a timewarp back to the era of MTV, "Safety Dance," and preppie bullies in upturned collars, as Cusack, his nerd nephew -- played by Clark Duke -- and his two
oldest pals -- played by Craig Robinson of "The Office" and Rob Corddry of "The Daily Show" fame -- take a dip in a mystical jacuzzi and head back in time to 1986, the moment when their lives fatefully veered off course.

Sure, the flick cribs a bit too much from the self-aware arrested-development raunch of "Old School" and "The Hangover" (especially on the DVD's slightly longer and lewder unrated version, but it will do nicely until Cusack ages a few more years and decides it's time to make his "Million Dollar Baby" or "Gran Torino."

Now for a look at what else is new on DVD: in "When You're Strange," a documentary narrated by Johnny Depp takes a look at the Doors; in "Red Desert," Italian arthouse director Michelangelo Antonioni serves up a haunting tale about alienation; and in "Predator," the 1987 action epic featuring Arnold "The Governator" Schwarzenegger gets a Blu-Ray special edition.

Though it has yet to receive a U.S. release date, the premiere of director Mikael Håfström's Shanghai was recently held in Beijing in advance of its June 17th theatrical release date in China. It's not surprising, then, that the movie's first trailer had Chinese subtitles.
A selection of theatrical and character teaser posters have been released in Chinese, as well. Thankfully, the behind-the-scenes featurette with Håfström and several cast members released for the Chinese premiere is in English — a great way to get acquainted with this thrilling, action-mystery love story set in Shanghai during WWII.
Here's the official synopsis of the movie:
Nothing is what it seems in this Casablanca-style international thriller set in the ancient Chinese city a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor. U.S. Secret Agent Paul Soames (John Cusack) has just arrived to investigate the murder of his best friend, only to become quickly immersed in a web of conspiracy and lies that beset the city. One week before opening to the public in China, epic thriller Shanghai held its world premiere in Beijing Thursday afternoon. Leading actors John Cusack and Gong Li graced the red carpet and spoke about their mutual admiration for each other and shooting Shanghai, hinting that their next collaboration would be a comedy.
From teen icon to hero in blockbuster 2012, which scored a record $80 million on the Chinese mainland, Cusack said China was a very mysterious place to him growing up. The 44-year-old US actor revealed that he got to know the country from Chinese novels and films, including Gong's past works with Zhang Yimou, including the 1994 success, To Live.
"The films were one of my first entries into China and Chinese culture," Cusack said.
He added that he has long been an admirer of Gong, whom he referred to as "a charming performer." He also spoke about his Shanghai co-stars Chow Yun-fat and Ken Watanabe saying "to work with such great actors is a rare honor." He added that he watched John Woo's The Killer, which Chow stars in, saying that he really enjoyed the avant-garde and classic action film.
"Chow is like the Humphrey Bogart of China," Cusack laughed.
In Shanghai, Cusack plays a US intelligence official who comes to Shanghai to investigate a friend's death shortly before Japan attacks Pearl Harbor during World War II. In his investigation, he meets local Mafia boss (Chow) and his wife (Gong) and falls in love with the latter, an elegant and mysterious woman.
"She is like a Mona Lisa on and off screen, with her mysterious power to attract the attention of every man," Cusack commented, saying that Gong has a very subtle way of conveying how the character feels. "A complicated and intricate performer as she is, I have to pay attention to not just her lines but her body movements and subtle gestures five seconds before and after those lines while we act in the same scene."
Cusack also revealed that he is planning to work with Gong again, but in a comedy, saying hopefully they will create a different type of spark than in a thriller and a love triangle relationship.
In response, Gong praised Cusack for being an exceptional actor and also a talented and charming person. She admitted being happy but nervous when she first heard that they would work together, concerned that there might be communication problems as he is from the US, even though she has worked alongside several of Cusack's countrymen in Memoirs of a Geisha and Miami Vice.
"When we met the first time in England, I realized that he was extremely kind and nice and we talked for quite a while," Gong recalled.
Shanghai also sees the second cooperation between Gong and Chow after Zhang Yimou's 2006 Curse of the Golden Flower, which was also Gong's last appearance on local screens. She used the word "joyful" to describe playing husband and wife with Chow for the second time, saying that they have got to know each other well enough to deliver an intimate performance.
Shanghai is Gong's first epic film for which she said it was very difficult to imagine the era and life of the times, but after studying the script and reading related history books, she was able to feel "the role growing inside of me." In her understanding, her role in Shanghai is brave and independent, a woman who pursues only what she wants.
"I hope audiences can feel and understand her love, bravery and wisdom," Gong said.
Shanghai is a joint production by the US' Weinstein Company and China's Huayi Brothers. It is also the first Asian production for the Weinstein Company.

BEIJING — John Cusack says "Shanghai" co-star Gong Li was part of his cinematic introduction to China, so he jumped at the chance to work with the veteran Chinese actress.

The 44-year-old American actor told a news conference in Beijing on Thursday that China was a "mysterious place" to him as a youth and that he learned about the country gradually through its movies, such as "To Live." In Zhang Yimou's 1994 film, Gong plays a suffering wife to a compulsive gambler.

Chinese officials never spelled out their reasons, but they were likely concerned about the film's historical backdrop - an issue skirted during the news conference. Many Chinese are still upset about atrocities committed by the Japanese military during its invasion.

BEIJING, China - John Cusack says "Shanghai" co-star Gong Li was part of his cinematic introduction to China, so he jumped at the chance to work with the veteran Chinese actress.

The 44-year-old American actor told a news conference in Beijing on Thursday that China was a "mysterious place" to him as a youth and that he learned about the country gradually through its movies, such as "To Live." In Zhang Yimou's 1994 film, Gong plays a suffering wife to a compulsive gambler.

After sitting on the shelf for over two years, the period crime-thriller Shanghai finally has a trailer. For most of it, I was wondering why the flick was kept from theaters for so long. It has tight premise, exotic locale, solid actors, and a nice look to it. Then the trailer had the courtesy to give away almost the entire flick and what appears to be the ending looks stupid beyond all reason. So if you want to see a film that you’ll like for maybe two-thirds of it and then check out due because of the climax, Shanghai looks like the movie for you.

Shanghai stars John Cusack, Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, and Ken Watanabe. Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the synopsis. The film is set to be released in China on June 17th and sometime in the US this September.

The Shanghai movie trailer video has hit the web in promotion of John Cusack and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s latest film roles. See the trailer below, get movie details and check out pictures of the duo after the jump.
Set around the time of Pearl Harbor, Cusack and Morgan star side by side in the latest film being directed by Mikael Hafstrom who has helmed such flicks as Derailed and 1408. Written by Hossein Amini, the movie seemed to do well by MovieMoron.Com with an early review that just hit the web.

Collin Willardson’s take on the action – “It was surprisingly action packed – I thought it was going to be a long, drawn out drama swamped with romantic subplots. It was a really clean (no foul language, no boobies, only minor drug usage kids) action drama. I wasn’t quite convinced by Cusack as a lethal weapon – I know he did Grosse Pointe Blank but he usually plays writers in his films, or some heartbroken guy who can’t find love. The scenery is spectacular, Shanghai itself looks amazing, and there are some great fight scenes.”

Cusack is in line to play Agent Soames while Morgan has taken on the role of Connor. Also set to appear are actors Frank Potente, David Morse, Ken Watannbe, Li Gong and Yun-Fat Chow.

Remembering Those Awesome ’80s

JOHN CUSACK didn’t need to make a movie about being trapped in the 1980s to know how that might feel. “It’s almost like a comic nightmare,” he said recently of his new film, “Hot Tub Time Machine,” “which for me is a very real nightmare. Every time I flip through the cable, I have flashbacks.”
In “Hot Tub Time Machine” (which opens Friday) Mr. Cusack, Rob Corddry (“The Daily Show”) and Craig Robinson (“The Office”) play three thwarted friends who, by combining a run-down steam bath with a contraband Russian energy drink, find themselves transported back to the decade of Reaganomics and Rubik’s Cubes. Also along for the ride is the much younger Clark Duke (“Clark and Michael”), who warns the guys not to alter the past, lest they seriously mess up the present day.
Mr. Cusack, who spent the ’80s growing up before audiences’ eyes in touchstone movies like “Sixteen Candles,” “Better Off Dead” and “One Crazy Summer” (before graduating to more mature films like “Eight Men Out,” “Say Anything” and “The Grifters”), generally isn’t in a hurry to revisit that phase of his career. “Being self-referential is really narcissistic,” he said. “Who’s to say anybody’s even thinking of you that much?”
But something about “Hot Tub Time Machine,” which is produced by his company, New Crime Productions, and directed by his longtime friend Steve Pink, spoke to him. “The idea was a mixture of really dumb with very, very smart and post-modern,” Mr. Cusack said. And seeing how fans fondly remember his ’80s comedies, he said: “I thought there was something delicious about a grown man having to get trapped in that. And then the joke’s on me.”
In the spirit of the film, we probed the film’s four stars (who were born between 1966 and 1985) for their memories of the ’80s. Here’s how their answers stack up.
Q. In the 1980s what did you think you’d be doing with your life in the year 2010?
JOHN CUSACK I remember very clearly being at the 1985 Super Bowl half-time show, on mushrooms. I hoped that I would be out of the ’80s in 2010. They frightened me, and I remain in fear. It might have been the psilocybin.
ROB CORDDRY My parents were perpetually 35, so I don’t know if I had much of a realistic concept of being 39, which back then I perceived as practically elderly. I probably would have said, “Well, I’ll be retired by then.”
CRAIG ROBINSON I became a schoolteacher, but that’s not what I was going for. I thought I was going to be a Jheri curl model.
CLARK DUKE Going back as far as I can remember, acting and writing and directing were pretty much what I wanted to do. I wouldn’t mind being a pro golfer, but I’m not nearly good enough.
Q. What’s an embarrassing fashion style that you’ll admit to sporting in that era?
CUSACK I don’t have to even comment on that because I can point to exculpatory evidence. It’s on cable. I have a cornucopia — a vast array of humiliating gear. And that was with me trying to be cool. That’s a self-styled train wreck.
CORDDRY I had a sleeveless shirt that I probably wore three times a week. This is seventh and eighth grade. And everybody used to wear their high tops untied, and I could never do it. I was always tripping on my laces.
ROBINSON I had a high-top fade, but it was cool. It was the box cut, and then faded out on the sides.
DUKE I wasn’t really dressing myself, so I can’t take a whole lot of responsibility. But every picture I’ve seen of me at a really young age, my mother would have me in little tuxedos and white suits. I always looked amazing, though. Like a young Kanye West.
Q. What’s your most vivid memory of Michael Jackson from the 1980s?
CUSACK That was chimp time, right? I just remember him being in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber with the monkey. It just seemed like it was going in the right direction. Things were looking good.
CORDDRY I got a boom box and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” for my birthday. It was one of those boom boxes that really lit up, had a lot of pyrotechnics, and I just destroyed that cassette. Destroyed it.
ROBINSON The Motown 25. When he popped out and did the moonwalk to “Billie Jean,” that just shocked the world. He reached in and grabbed your soul with that performance. He was the ultimate.
DUKE To my parents Michael Jackson was their Elvis. He was the biggest star in the world. My first memory may be the Michael Jackson video game for Sega Genesis, and you sprinkled powder on people to kill them. It was a really weird game.
Q. If you had to choose between the films of John Hughes or the films of Savage Steve Holland, which would you go with?
CUSACK I was only in one of the John Hughes films, and I never saw the other ones. I didn’t understand them. I kept hearing a really hip 40-year-old person talking in teenagers’ mouths. And I was in two movies with Steve Holland. So I don’t think I would choose. I don’t think I would have an opinion.
CORDDRY I think the Steve Holland were more of an influence on me, but I’d probably take a John Hughes over one of those any day. Sorry, Steve.
ROBINSON I was definitely into the John Hughes movies. I was a big “Breakfast Club” guy. Molly Ringwald was, like, bam! You know? What’s up?
DUKE Hughes, by far, man, come on. I like “Better Off Dead” as much as the next guy, but John Hughes is the Frank Capra of that generation. He’s pretty tough to beat.
Q. Which member of “The A-Team” do you most closely identify with?

CUSACK I have to say Mr. T, just because he lived in Chicago. There was this place he used to go to work out, and he’d always be there in the steam room with this big towel around him, with his mohawk and his chains. He was the nicest guy.
CORDDRY Murdock. Because I do spend most of my time in an asylum, and I have to be broken out by a team of experts, and no one ever dies. You were expecting me to say Face?
ROBINSON B. A. Baracus! Because he pitied the fool.
DUKE Maybe Murdock. He’s the only other name I can remember besides Mr. T. There’s an “A-Team” movie coming out, and I got news for them: People my age, we don’t have any idea who the A-Team is.
Q. “Dynasty”: Krystle or Alexis?
CUSACK I was “Dallas.” I was Team Charlene Tilton, Team Victoria Principal. I had a little boy crush on Ms. Tilton and Ms. Principal. Maybe a little more than a boy crush.
CORDDRY Never having watched a day of it, I’d say the black one.
ROBINSON Which one was the bad one, Alexis? Oh, yeah, Joan Collins all the way. She was the girl. She was so, so devious. So devious it was sexy. But they both would have got it.
DUKE I won’t even be able to make a joke about this one. I got nothing.
Q. Tiffany or Debbie Gibson?
CUSACK I used to hear those things and try to re-enact medieval truncheon battles. I would be anti-Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.
CORDDRY Deborah Gibson. I just don’t think I was much into redheads back then. Imagine if Tiffany had been the one to stay relevant? What would that world look like?
ROBINSON Tiffany all day long. [sings] “I think we’re alone now.” That’s the only song of hers I’ve ever heard, and I recently found out that was Tiffany. So Tiffany will stomp Debbie Gibson on her neck. Tiffany rocks.
DUKE I’ve seen their names on the ’80s channel on XM, that’s about it. They’re not even like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, right?
Q. “We Are the World”: The original or the remake?
CUSACK I’ve got to go with the first one, just for the hairstyles alone. Just for the dudes. There were mullets and Jheri curls, and the girls had that crazy, tight big thing going. That was a good look.
CORDDRY The original, because Vince Vaughn’s not in it. I’m still trying to figure out why he pops up. I think he’s great, he’s just a little out of place.
ROBINSON The original, just because they had Bruce Springsteen. Everybody they had was awesome, but when he came in — [sings] “We aaaaaare the worrrrld” — that was my favorite part.
DUKE Just the idea of remaking “We Are the World” is so epically stupid. Every earthquake we should trot out a bunch of random celebrities and have them redo a song. Get Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez to redo “Islands in the Stream” the next natural disaster.
Q. Are there any unrequited crushes from that period that you can safely admit to?
CUSACK I started making movies in the ’80s, so when I was in high school, I got to go be on set with Jacqueline Bisset. I was a geeky 16-year-old staring at a goddess. I thought: “Show business — this kind of works. This or study hall?”
CORDDRY I used to religiously watch a show called “Dance Party USA,” and fell in love with a girl named Kelly, the cutest blonde, sweetest face in the world. Cut to: late ’90s, fall head over heels in love with Kelly Ripa. Same person. So it’s got to be real.
ROBINSON Janet Jackson, like Penny from “Good Times.” Janet Jackson. I’m supposed to be with Janet Jackson. This is your chance to get it out to the world.
DUKE All my crushes are probably from the ’90s. Anybody from the ’80s would be inappropriately older than me now. What if they read this? For the sake of not emotionally scarring anybody, I’m not going to answer.

Times May Change, but Regret Endures

“Hot Tub Time Machine” is the poignant story of three men, adrift in their 40s, who try to recapture the lost joys and squandered possibilities of their youth. I’m not entirely joking, though the movie itself is a nonstop barrage — somewhere between a riot and an orgy — of crude, obnoxious gags and riffs. If you are a connoisseur of sexual, scatological or just plain stupid humor, you will find your appetite satisfied, even glutted. But viewers of a certain age and background — let’s say those who know the lyrics to “Jesse’s Girl” by heart, even if they never really liked that song — are likely to endure the merry anarchy with a twinge of pained, slightly nauseated nostalgia.

Nick, Lou and Adam, whom we first meet in the throes of early middle age, are still haunted by memories of the 1980s, when they were young and dumb and full of potential. Here in the weary present, Adam (John Cusack) has just been dumped by his live-in girlfriend, and you have the feeling that this kind of thing has happened to him many times before.
Nick (Craig Robinson) has a stable if not quite happy marriage, but his job in a dog-grooming salon provides regular, humiliating reminders of the musical career he might have had. And Lou (a frighteningly manic Rob Corddry) is an alcoholic, divorced, wildly self-destructive train wreck of a man. But the movie doesn’t really ask you to pity these guys; they feel sorry enough for themselves already, and their misery seems well earned in any case.
The three pals, joined by Adam’s doughy 20-year-old nephew, Jacob (Clark Duke, looking like a younger, less smug version of the Apple scapegoat and ersatz know-it-all John Hodgman), light out for a ski resort that was once the scene of some vaguely recollected, endlessly mythologized youthful debauchery. They find the place a dilapidated shell of its former glory, but a night in a hot tub — which is exactly what the movie’s title says it is — transports them back to 1986, when the place was buzzing with bad haircuts, garish clothes and enough winking pop culture references to furnish a weeklong Trivial Pursuit tournament. Hey, isn’t that Chevy Chase? It is!
Remember “Red Dawn,” “The Karate Kid” and “Back to the Future”? “Hot Tub Time Machine” sure does, the last one in particular. Crispin Glover, George McFly himself, shows up as the ski lodge bellhop, and while there is no DeLorean on the premises, there is a brilliant send-up of the prom scene where Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly invented rock ’n’ roll. (It involves Mr. Robinson and the Black Eyed Peas. I’ve spoiled nothing).
Mr. Cusack, of course, is an ’80s allusion in his own right, starring in moves like “The Sure Thing,” “Better Off Dead” and “Say Anything,” and his status as a walking sight gag relieves him of the burden of being actively funny, a job few men can do as well as Mr. Robinson or Mr. Corddry.
At this point plot summary becomes not only superfluous, but also potentially offensive. Steve Pink, the director, and a trio of dementedly scholarly screenwriters (Josh Heald, Sean Anders and John Morris) load up every scene with more jokes than necessary — visual allusions, verbal flourishes and plain old fall-on-your-face slapstick — but their excess proves to be a canny strategy. The picture moves so quickly and crazily, swerving and skidding and doubling back for seconds, that minor lapses in wit are immediately overtaken by major (and therefore hilarious) lapses in taste.
The undercurrent of misogyny and homophobic panic that courses through most arrested-development, guy-centric comedies these days is certainly present here. But unlike, say, “The Hangover,” which sweetens and sentimentalizes its man-child characters — allowing them to run wild and then run home to Mommy — “Hot Tub Time Machine” is honest in its coarseness and pretty tough on the fellows who are the agents and objects of its satire.
At a certain point you begin to suspect that lessons will be learned and friendships reaffirmed, but the phony happy ending you find yourself dreading doesn’t quite materialize. Or, rather, the ending — not to give too much away — is so blatantly fantastical that it offers far less comfort than it might. It vaults the film into a realm of wish fulfillment that, while delightful to contemplate (if only for Mr. Corddry’s hair extensions) also carries a bracingly bitter aftertaste. “Hot Tub Time Machine” may be a goofy, lusty, uninhibited lark, but its true subject is the disappointment that threads through every phase of the life cycle.
Nick, Lou and Adam are miserable in 2010, but one thing that becomes clear pretty quickly is that they weren’t all that happy in 1986 either. “All we had was Reagan and AIDS,” Adam laments.
And even if, as the movie suggests, they — we — had so much more, including heavy metal and not-yet-old-school hip-hop, cocaine by the bushel and spandex by the mile, it was not easy to be young. Just look at the faces of the younger selves Nick, Adam and Lou sometimes glimpse in the mirror. These guys are confused and terrified.
Jacob’s skeptical, worried presence as an ambassador from the era of text messaging and Second Life serves as a reminder that nothing much has changed. And of course being 40 is no picnic either.
The cultural detritus piled up everywhere, to be recycled, cherished, mocked and travestied, provides small — but nonetheless real — compensation for the spiritual deficits of modern life. Is it crazy to write that sentence in a review of “Hot Tub Time Machine”? Not really: the movie itself proves the point. It’s fun, it’s sad, and it’s kind of sad that it’s so much fun.
“Hot Tub Time Machine” is rated R. More sex, more drugs, more rock ’n’ roll, more hair.

The trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine, starring John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, and Clark Duke, just came online and boy is it awful. I’m trying to take solace in Steve’s report on the red-band trailer he saw at AFM because this green-band version is the kind of that could kill any interest in the movie. The intro is terrible, the jokes are unfunny (the one about inventing a combination of Twitter and Viagra was painful), and the only glimmer of hope was Craig Robinson being his typical amazing self. My hope is that the film is so raunchy that they just can’t do a good green-band trailer (although that didn’t stop The Hangover) and a red-band trailer will rekindle the interest that this trailer will most likely kill. When you think “Roland Emmerich disaster-film leading man,” the image of John Cusack probably isn’t the one that leaps straight to mind. But that’s who Emmerich specifically sought for this week’s epic 2012, which, for all of its floods, volcanoes and California-collapsing temblors, is something of a classically Cusackian tale of underdog romance and wry grace under pressure. The actor plays Jackson Curtis, a failed writer, husband and father who accidentally encounters word of a world-ending series of natural disasters. Jackson manages to land squarely in the middle of all of them with his estranged family, resulting in the slow correction of perhaps 2012’s biggest disaster — himself.
Cusack spoke to Movieline last week about his unlikely-ish collaboration with Hollywood’s modern cataclysm kingpin, the public’s love of disaster, and his own favorite classics of the genre.
What was your initial response to this script?They offered it to me, and, well, I read it and really liked it, so there you go.
Was there ever a moment when you said, “Wow, I can’t believe Roland’s actually going to do this — I’ve got to be a part of it”?You always try to envision yourself in a role, but at first I just thought, “How can he film that?” That’s a pretty good thing when you’re reading a script. You feel like, “I can kind of barely imagine this, but I don’t know how anyone could shoot it.” Whether it was the water coming over the Himalayas, or he’d have things like, “And Rome fell.” Or, “California falls into the ocean.”
Period?Yeah! So you’re thinking, “What would that look like?” As far as epic, crazy, world-changing action, it was kind of a wild read.
"This one Roland played more like a melodrama. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. He was playing it sincerely."
This film has an unusual light-to-dark-and-back again tone for a Roland Emmerich movie. What do you think his approaching you says about the dynamics he had in mind?I remember Independence Day kind of winking at the camera a lot more — not kitschy, but jokey. Like it was really played for laughs a lot. This one Roland played more like a melodrama. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. He was playing it sincerely. But that was all in the tone of the script.
How did you two develop the right tone together, especially with everything happening around Jackson’s family?We talked about it for sure. How do we keep the tension, but not get so serious that we lose [people]. It’s still entertainment, obviously. It’s not really a chronicle of horrible world disasters. Otherwise there’d be no entertainment at all. So you’ve got a thrill-ride roller coaster, but we just talked about ways to keep the tension real.
How is Roland as a director of actors?Great. He’s got a great reputation with actors, and deservedly so. Some tough customers have given him rave reviews, and I would join in. He’s very, very collaborative, and he really listens to actors. He follows them, and if they want to go somewhere instinctively, he’ll go with you. And he’s a gentleman and an honest guy. I’d work with him again in a second.
Why do think audiences are entertained by these kinds of cataclysmic disaster epics? Billions of people are dying!I think probably because they give voice to everybody’s collective fears, for sure. Movies about these myths — or stories about the apocalypse — imagine a time when there’s a kind of an event that makes everything equal and all people equal and wipes out all of the divisions between people — and the illusions of all those divisions. There are still rich and poor until the very end, but there’s no Chinese and Americans and Russians and Christians and Jews and Muslims. Everybody’s in the same boat, and all the countries are in the same boat. I think people really want a world like that, and it takes something cataclysmic to imagine how it could ever happen.
Those kinds of elements are a big part of it. In the religious tradition, at least, there’s utopia after the apocalypse. There’s heaven. I think we play out these apocalyptic things all the time. You see it in government; there are purges. It always takes some horrible manifestation of that drama, but when horrible things happen, you can generally see the best in people. Or you hope that’s what will happen.
That definitely is a constant theme in the disaster genre. Did you have favorites that influenced you or excited you for this film?Yeah, I mean, I loved The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure… all those films from the ’70s. I was always a big fan. And I like the post-apocalyptic movies, too — the really obscure ones, like A Boy and His Dog. And that one was sort of a precursor to Mad Max and The Road Warrior; I’m sure it influenced George Miller. And even the metaphysical mindbenders, stuff like The Exorcist. Really, those are all dealing with the end — an apocalypse of some sort.

Cusack plays Jackson Curtis, a novelist/limo driver who must save his family from the end of the world. He told us whether or not he believes in the 2012 prophecy, whether or not he got injured during filming and how he's taking a hint from the "green set" and reducing his carbon footprint.
So when did you first hear about the prophecy? "Oh, I heard about it a bunch of times."And do you believe it?"Uh, I think it's more like a shift in consciousness."Why do you think Hollywood is so obsessed with disaster movies?"Hollywood is obsessed with everything! It was a really fun movie to make. Sometimes, physically it gets a little hard."Was there a lot of training involved?"Sometimes when you're doing some of the physical things, you know, on a hundred day shoot, you have to take care of your hamstrings and stuff."Did you get injured during filming?"I got injured sometimes. You can't keep your body warm for twelve hours a day."We recently learned that this film set was actively trying to be carbon neutral and completely green. "Yeah!"Is there anything you do in your personal life to keep down the carbon emissions?"I do some stuff around the house. I haven't been able to...get off the grid yet. NEW YORK, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. film star John Cusack says he is happy people still love his classic teen romance "Say Anything" two decades after he made it.
A 20th anniversary edition DVD version of the movie, co-starring Ione Skye, Lili Taylor, Jeremy Piven and Joan Cusack, was released this week.
"I have great fondness for it," Cusack told UPI in New York Thursday. "It was a great collaboration with (writer-director) Cameron Crowe and I was really proud of the movie, so it's really nice that people are still remembering it this many years later. I'm always kind of delighted that people still like it."
Told there were groups of guys marauding around Manhattan this week dressed as his character Lloyd Dobler -- complete with his trademark trench coat and boom box -- to celebrate the release of the "Say Anything" DVD, Cusack cringed and quipped, "I thought that was just on Halloween, no?"
The actor will be seen next week playing a nice-guy novelist trying to save his family during a global catastrophe in "2012."

Cusack excited about Emmerich's '2012'
LOS ANGELES, March 28 (UPI) -- U.S. actor John Cusack says his upcoming role in director Roland Emmerich's apocalyptic epic "2012" should be a good career boost.The 42-year-old actor, who is coming off the straight-to-DVD movie "War, Inc.," said the new action film will mark his first big budget production since 1997's "Con Air," The Times of London reported Saturday."The rationale is it's good to be in a big hit movie!" Cusack said of the Emmerich film. "Good for your career, and it's nice to be wanted."Cusack did suggest it was difficult at times to adapt to the big-budget planning associated with the Hollywood production."It's one of those scripts where they have one line: 'Rome burns.' An entire city! I was like: 'How would you show that?' Cusack set for 'Hot Tub' comedy

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. actor John Cusack is set to star in and produce the big-screen comedy, "Hot Tub Time Machine," The Hollywood Reporter said.
Comedian Rob Corddry is co-starring in the movie, which is to be directed by Steve Pink in Vancouver, British Columbia, starting in April.
The movie is about a group of longtime friends who miss the good old days and end up being transported back to 1987 by a hot tub that turns out to be a time machine, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.
Cusack's film credits include "Say Anything," "Grosse Pointe Blank," "Con Air," "High Fidelity" and "America's Sweethearts."
Corddry has appeared in the films "W." and "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay."

Alleged stalker admits calling Cusack

LOS ANGELES, July 12 (UPI) -- A woman who allegedly stalked John Cusack has admitted in a Los Angeles court she attempted to contact the actor while incarcerated.
Emily Leatherman, 33, admitted calling the "Identity" star while being held by authorities pending a Friday court hearing, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Ann Ambrose had accused Leatherman of making the phone calls, a violation of a restraining order issued against her.
The accusation and ensuing confession came during a hearing to see if Leatherman is mentally fit to stand trial for related stalking charges.
As a result of the confession by Leatherman, who is acting as her own attorney, Ambrose said she would attempt to revoke the defendant's phone privileges if she violates the order again.
The Times said the presiding judge in the case postponed a ruling on Leatherman's mental state until a later date.

The acclaimed actor gets back into blockbuster mode for the end-times spectacle 2012, and dwells on the frightening Mayan Prophecies people are obsessing about.
John Cusack (Con Air, High Fidelity, 1408) stars in Columbia Pictures’ new disaster epic 2012 as Jackson Curtis, a civilian who stumbles into the news that the world as we know it is coming to an end. v Jackson, however, is not a picture-perfect family man.
A failed author, Jackson works as a limousine driver by day, as he watches his children bond with his ex-wife’s new boyfriend. “He tried to keep his life together,” Cusack explains. But it was something else about the script that lured the actor in. “It’s kind of an unusual, funny script. I don’t know if I thought the end of the world could be fun, but this movie has a gallows humor to it that I found pretty interesting.”
Do you think people are going to get paranoid about seeing a film about the end of the world?
I don’t know, maybe. I think a lot of people are already kind of obsessed with the Mayan Prophecies. There’s a real fascination for that kind of thing. I know when I first read about Nostradamus it hooked me. Who doesn’t want to read that—it’s endlessly fascinating, right? It just trips you out. It’s great. No matter if you want to believe it or you think it’s all crackpot stuff, I think it’s undeniably compelling. Or if you even read prophecies, like The Book of Revelations, just the imagery and the poetry of it is so intense. And if you’re raised a Catholic, too, you’re raised with that in your consciousness, too.
You don’t make a lot of these huge movies. Why did you choose this one?
It sort of chose me, I was just at home doing my thing and I get a call saying Roland (Emmerich, the director and cowriter) wants you to do this movie. I met him, and it was a big movie for Sony Pictures and I read the script and it was actually very well-written and surprising in lots of ways. It wasn’t like a genre disaster movie, it was very different to what I expected, and so it was a kind of easy choice for me.
Has working on 2012 changed your mind about working on other big, blockbuster films?
Yeah...well, it didn’t change my mind about it as much as if you can work on a movie that’s like this, which is kind of an A movie all the way around, then great. Roland casts actors to do this stuff, whereas usually actors who do more of the action genre would get in other studio films like this. Roland casts actors that he likes, and what was remarkable about the script was that there are all these very human stories. Like, page after page, these things would happen and it would then say, “and Rome fell....” Page after page, these amazing things would happen and you would think, “I have no idea how he would even approach shooting that.” As a filmmaker, I just go, “Well, how do you shoot that? Where do you put the camera, how does one do that?” There were things that I’ve never seen even attempted on film—the scale of it was incredible. And I did think, “Well, will you have time for the acting?” And he most certainly did. A lot of attention was paid to that all the way through the shoot. Actually the script was all about these very simple, family things, and Roland was very focused on telling that story with all of this other, amazing stuff happening as well.
So it’s still about the story as much as the effects?
Yes, very much so. It was amazing. So he would do all this big stuff and then he would totally focus on every character. I’ve done other films where (the acting) is an absolute afterthought. But I think that has to do with Roland being at that place in his life where he’s earned the right to work in a way that is optimum for him and for actors. And it was extraordinary to see—he has all this stuff in his brain and he is somehow able to put that up on the screen, and that alone would be enough to drive most people insane. (Laughs) But he does that and has time for the actors and that’s very unique, I think.
One of the moral dilemmas in the film is whether the public should be told about the impending disaster. What’s your view?
I was always geared toward telling the truth. But yeah, I think they should. Shouldn’t people have the right to know and to be able to do what they want with their last remaining days? I think that would be right.
So are you still planning a holiday for 2013, or are you a little concerned that the Mayan Prophecies might be true?
(Laughs) No, I don’t think the world will end. I think maybe it will just be a change in consciousness in 2012. I think there will be a big shift in consciousness. That’s probably what I think will happen. Either that or it really will be the end. (Laughs) I obviously hope it’s not.
If you had to save a favorite band, who would it be?
That’s a really good question. I’d say Bob Dylan. I’d ask Bob Dylan on the boat. He would get to come on the spaceship.
If you knew that you were going to die, and somebody is going to be saved, what would be the best advice you could give that person?
Bring some sunblock? I don’t know. (Laughs) Eat sensible foods in the new world, diet and exercise.
And what things wouldn’t you be too sorry about seeing destroyed?
I would destroy a lot of the news organizations—I would blow them up! (Laughs) I think Reality TV, although I haven’t watched much of it, but what I’ve watched of it, I think I’d blow that up. A few of the studios (laughs)—but not Sony. Independent Spirit Award Shows, award shows, I’d blow up award shows....
Even if you won an Oscar?
Yeah. Blow it up! (Laughs) Yeah. Absolutely. That’s a good question. That’s got me really going. Yeah, I think CNN, whenever any celebrity dies, I’d just blow them up and just have them rebuild the network, so you can’t have like the Michael Jackson death channel on for three weeks (laughs) while there’s like two wars going on. (Laughs) Fox news would go, too—that goes without saying.
There must have been quite a lot of physical challenges on this shoot.
It was really kind of a nice shoot, there were such great professionals and so amazing to work with, and so it was really nice for me. Doing all the underwater stuff was pretty intense, and then some of the physical stuff was, too. There were a couple of times, like when they have you on a conveyor belt—one of those runner things when your character is running away from some impending disaster—and you’ve done it a couple of times and then you’d have to say, “You understand that we can do this like, four, five, six times more and that’s fine. But if we have to do this 15 more times I’m going to pull a hamstring and I won’t be able to walk tomorrow. So you do understand that will be your choice?” (Laughs)
So when you do an action movie, you have to like let everyone know what’s about to happen. Say, jump over that fence and tumble—I’ll do it like 10 times. And if I do it 30 times, that might be too much—so you have to negotiate. (Laughs) That’s the same on any action film because they want to get so much coverage—but there’s only so much my hamstrings can take!
2012 is epic and provides a big cinematic experience. But you’ve done lots of smaller films throughout your career that have had a big effect on people. Is that the intention, to balance the two?
Hopefully, I’ve made some films that have made people kind of read things when they’ve seen the movie we made of the book, made people feel like they weren’t alone, whatever—stories or films do help people, some of them have been nice enough to say so.

John Cusack and Amanda Peet try to outrun the end of the world in '2012,' and they're telling ET all about it.
We caught up with John and Amanda, along with their co-star Chiwetel Ejiofor, at Yosemite National Park to talk about the disaster film, directed by Roland Emmerich.
'2012' follows the premise that, according to the ancient calendar created by the Mayans, the world will end in December of the year 2012. In the film, when that date arrives, all humans on earth are faced with global cataclysms.
"I knew a little bit about the Mayans," John told ET, "and they had the most intricate calendar system and the most accurate sense of time, like to the second, of any civilization… and on December 21, 2012, it just stops."
He says that the film, while visually awe-inspiring, also focuses on relationships: "You get caught up in the stories, and all the characters are trying to reconcile their relationships with each other. And as you think about what would happen at the end of the world, you think, if I only had so much time left, who would I spend it with? And who would I want to get straight with or make amends to?"
Amanda gives a lot of credit to Roland, saying, "He is a master at making people scared and making it believable and authentic."
John, for his part, says he was thrilled to re-team with Amanda, his co-star from 'Identity' and 'Martian Child': "We were both so happy we could do another movie together, because usually studios want you to pair up with somebody you've never been with. And this is our third one. We kind of thought, 'Really? We can get away with this?'"
'2012' explodes into theaters on November 13.

A storm that ripped through the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos this week left more than 400 dead. A quake-triggered tsunami in the South Pacific on Tuesday hit the islands of American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga, killing more than 160. And an earthquake Wednesday in western Indonesia left more than 700 dead, with thousands more missing.
John Cusack said "2012" was not meant to exploit disasters but to highlight how people can rise above their "normal capabilities and normal morals" in difficult situations.
Director Roland Emmerich said he had long been fascinated with myths about flooding.
He said he hopes the film can persuade audiences to spend more time with their families and "see the important things in life and not get carried away by other things."
